Painting Three, Step Six

Painting a Place Mat...

I begin the place mat by laying in a wash of Cerullian Blue leaving light areas white and using two values of the hue. Before and after images are to the right.

And to the left, I have used the same Cerullian Blue to add the wrinkled... ruffled... whatever treatment on the individual pleats of the place mat.

If you are painting along with me, stay loose because repetitive elements like these can quickly tend to look too much alike.

To the right, I have begun the next step in the painting of the place mat. An important part is the reflection on the mat and the focus of light through the glass balls onto the mat. To establish these elements, I need more definition in the clear glass marbles to show where to put the highlights on the mat.

I have begun to rough a light Cerullian Blue in an attempt to define the glass marbles. This stage of the painting, due to its complexity and detail, will take time and considerable patience.
