Painting Two, Step Eight

Background's pretty much in...

As you can see with the close up on the right, I added more definition to the foliage of the tree line behind the barn and made the red wood barn with its shingled roof a bit more interesting. Plus I subtley gave the white fence more substance and form.

Also, please notice in the picture below, a wide shot of the whole painting, that I have roughed in shadows, tree shadows, that I hope will pull the background and the forground of the painting together. The shadows also may solve the transition problem that I briefly mentioned in Step Seven.

Looking at the painting, the image on your left, I am continually disturbed by the darkness of the sky in the painting's upper right and the predominance of orange in the tree behind the horses.

An original thought with this painting was to play the dark Prussian Blue sky off the bright Gamboge orange tree. I think that concept can be held but at the same time soften the sky and orange tree.

The next step then is do accomplish this softened look and will be the goal of Step 9.
