| Watch a painting happen... Painting Two, Step Six Covering paper... To the right I have stroked in the competing color. The blue and yellow-orange battle each other as I planned and now the new challenge becomes subduing that battle to the context of the whole. At this point, confusion reigns but I have faith. My next step is to bring the other elements of the painting into form. As I do those elements, I will post images. At this point I am not sure if that process will take only this step six or if it will require more. I have discovered this covering paper process will take more than just this step six. If I paint too much without sharing an image with you, I am afraid you will become lost so I will break "covering paper" into several steps. To the right I have begun covering the paper. First a background wash consisting of yellow ocher, a touch of raw umber and a ratio of pigment to water of probably 100 to 1. I leave the paper showing for what I envision as a white-rock, gravel, approach road to the barn. Next I washed in the barn's roof with a touch of Gamboge dulled with Payne's Gray and used a darker (just a touch more gray) value of the same for eaves' shadow and the barn door. Finally, I washed in the red barn with a wash of Burnt Sienna with a touch of Cadmium Red. You might notice I left different values of the darker door to imply items, perhaps hay bales, inside the barn and I was also careful to define the fence slats. Next, we will work on establishing the horses. |
