James A. Humphrey is offering a four-day watercolor seminar in his historic-district, downtown Grapevine gallery/studio beginning when 6 or more participants have registered. The seminar will be from 9 am to 3 pm each day with a one-hour lunch break. A maximum of twelve participants will be registered. Tuition for this 10 hour seminar is $350.00.

Practicing Professional Artist: Mr. Humphrey currently paints in watercolor and oils using a realistic approach. His paintings sell for prices ranging from $3,000 for a single-sheet watercolor up to $58,000 for a 6 x 8 oil painting.

General Information: All classes meet for two hours once a week and require a minimum of 6 participating artists with a maximum group size of 10. Reservations are first-come, first-serve for all classes. Classes begin when a minimum of six artists are reserved for any class. Instruction can be arranged off-site by contacting the artist. If a class is already in progress, reservations are accepted for the next class. Cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, and America Express are accepted. Required art supplies are not included in tuition and may be supplied by the artist/student. They can be purchased three weeks in advance from the studio (art supply lists and costs from the studio are included at the end of each class description).
With the exception of Studio Oil Painting which meets regularly on Friday, all classes meet one time a week, Mondays through Thursdays or Saturdays, depending on reservation preferences, and continue for 10 consecutive weeks.
Make-up classes for artist/students are not offered and after the second class, tuition is not refundable but can be transferred for emergency reasons to future classes of the same title.

Studio Oil Painting On-going exploration of oil painting on canvas, much like a college painting lab, students paint in oil or acrylic (oil preferred) in their own style, of their own subject. Object is to help students improve individual skills.

Drawing I: Introduction to drawing with dry mediums (pencil, conte, and charcoal) and some pen and ink
Cost: $350 per student plus art supplies
Week One/Two Drawing simple geometric forms (squares, rectangles, balls, cones, cylinders), shaded and linear, alone and in complex compositions. Emphasis on accuracy and hand-eye coordination. Medium, pencil. Principles of perspective, what they are and how theyre used.
Week Three/Four -- Drawing simple geometric forms (squares, rectangles, balls, cones, cylinders), linear and with shading, alone and in increasingly complex compositions. Emphasis on accuracy and hand-eye coordination. Medium, pen and ink.
Week Five/Six Drawing a simple still-life composition in pencil and pen and ink.
Week Seven. Drawing a simple still-life composition in a monochromatic wash (ink, acrylic, or oil) with brushes.
Week Eight Drawing; instructors choice for class review/remedial work, medium will vary according to students need.
Week Nine/Ten Drawing from a photograph, students choice, with the drawing as finished art. Drawing from a photograph, students choice, with the drawing as a sketch for completion in another medium. Tips and tricks for the different finishing mediums.

Reflected Color Theory: Introduction to color theory in the reflected spectrum plus pigment mixing to match
Cost: $350 per student plus art supplies
Week One The difference between reflected and projected color. The reflected color wheel, 2 and 3 dimensional. Introduction to the elements of color. Color systems demystified. Quick introduction of popular color harmony theories and how they relate to the study of color.
Week Two Simple exercises with flat color using colored paper introducing hue, value, and intensity. Introduction of primary, secondary, and tertiary color.
Week Three/Four Translation of week one and two into pigment color as used in painting, repeating all the paper exercises with mixed pigments (acrylic or oil).
Week Five Exploration of color hue in pigments

Week Six Exploration of color value in pigments (acrylic or oil) and how to mix them.
Week Seven Exploration of color intensity in pigments (acrylic or oil) and how to mix them.

Week Ten Painting a small canvas using color lessons learned from a photograph matching color hues, values, and intensities.

Introduction to Transparent Watercolor: Exploration of loose and tight style watercolor technique at an introductory level for beginners with little watercolor training or experience.

Week One/Two Introducing a simple watercolor palette of transparent colors with mixing experiments designed to achieve pre-determined effects. Introducing the different types of watercolor brushes and the advantages of each. Introducing the different types of watercolor papers and the advantages of each. Week One/Two Principles of single and multi-point perspective, what they are and how theyre used with in-depth exploration. Pencil perspective drawings from still life normal setups to the complex. Mastery of perspective understanding and usage is the goal.
Week Three/Four -- Drawing from photography. Series of drawings in students choice of dry-mediums.
Week Five/Six/Seven Drawing from nature, weather permitting, in students choice of dry mediums.
